Passport photo vs. exam application photo
Both are small, plain-background portraits — but different authorities check different things, and one photo does not automatically satisfy the other.
The similarity is only surface-level
A passport photo and an SSC or UPSC exam photo look nearly identical to the eye — head and shoulders, plain light background, neutral expression. That similarity is why people assume a spare passport photo will work for an exam form, or vice versa, and it is a common cause of rejected uploads.
What differs in practice
- Dimensions: an Indian passport photo is 2×2 inch square (600×600px); most Indian exam photos are 3.5×4.5cm portrait (413×531px) — a different aspect ratio entirely, so a passport photo crops badly into an exam frame.
- File size floor: exam portals enforce a minimum KB as well as a maximum, which passport systems generally do not — a passport-quality photo can be too small for an exam upload.
- Background colour: most Indian exam photos want white or very light; several countries' passport photos specifically require a different shade (Kuwait and several Gulf states require blue, for example).
- Recency and captioning: UPSC requires a name-and-date caption printed into the image itself; passport photos never do. Many exam boards also want the photo from within the last 3–6 months, tighter than most passport windows.
The one thing that does carry over
The underlying photograph — good lighting, plain background, squared-on pose — is reusable for both. What is not reusable is the finished, cropped-and-compressed file. Keep (or re-take) one clean source photo, then run it through the sizing tool for whichever specific document you are applying for, rather than reusing one finished output across purposes.

Same issue in reverse — wrong aspect ratio, and passport authorities are typically stricter about print quality and DPI than exam portals are. Use the country-specific passport preset instead.
