Why photographs get rejected for New Zealand Passport
- Photo older than 6 months

- A selfie — New Zealand requires someone else to take the photo
- File under 250 KB or over 5 MB
Frequently asked questions
Does the photo have to be exactly 3:4?
Yes — Passports NZ validates the aspect ratio directly. This preset locks the crop frame to 3:4 so the upload cannot be rejected on that basis.
Does this tool upload my photo anywhere?
No. Cropping, resizing and compression all run inside your browser using the Canvas API. The image never leaves your device — you can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.
